Are You Living Your Own Dream or Someone Else’s

As I indicated in yesterday’s post, may people drift through life without a plan. For some, things work out fine. For most, they end up far from their intended destination.

Others, end up living someone else’s dream, the victim of someone else’s agenda. This almost happened to a Mexican fisherman in a story told by Tim Ferriss in The 4-Hour Work Week. (This story appears in various forms on the Internet.)

An American businessman took a vacation to a small coastal Mexican village on doctor’s orders. Unable to sleep after an urgent phone call from the office the first morning, he walked out to the pier to clear his head. A small boat with just one fisherman had docked, and inside the boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.

“How long did it take you to catch them?” the American asked.

“Only a little while,” the Mexican replied in surprisingly good English.

“Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?” the American then asked.

“I have enough to support my family and give a few to friends,” the Mexican said as he unloaded them into a basket.

“But … What do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican looked up and smiled. “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Julia, and stroll into the village each evening, where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, señor.”

The American laughed and stood tall. “Sir, I’m a Harvard M.B.A. and can help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. In no time, you could buy several boats with the increased haul. Eventually, you would have a fleet of fishing boats.”

He continued, “Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the consumers, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village, of course, and move to Mexico City, then to Los Angeles, and eventually New York City, where you could run your expanding enterprise with proper management.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, señor, how long will all this take?”

To which the American replied, “15–20 years. 25 tops.”

“But what then, señor?”

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.”

“Millions, señor? Then what?”

“Then you would retire and move to a small coastal fishing village, where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos …”

The only thing worse than drifting without a plan is having your plans hijacked by someone else.

You can avoid this unfortunate end and make sure you are fulfilling your unique, God-given calling by answering these three questions:

Am I living my own dream or someone else’s? If we are not careful, we can unconsciously be following someone else’s agenda for our lives. This usually happens because we are unwilling to take responsibility for our own lives.

What is my dream? This can get lost in the complexity of life. As a result, we need to pause and remember our own agenda. What is it that we believe God is calling us to be and to do? What is our passion? What would we do if we were brave?

What can I do now to move in the direction of my dream? The only way to reclaim our dream is to reject all substitutes and begin moving in the direction of our dreams. We don’t have to do anything heroic. We can start small and take baby steps. The issue is to make sure we are making progress toward our goals.

Don’t spend your life fulfilling someone else’s agenda. Accept responsibility for your own life. Pursue your goals and live your dream. Live an intentional life.

Britain must confront a culture of laziness, irresponsibility and selfishness which fueled four days of riots that left five dead, thousands facing criminal charges and hundreds of millions of pounds (dollars) of damage, Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledged Monday.

As rival political leaders staked out their response to England’s unrest, Cameron pledged to deliver a raft of new policies by October aimed at reversing the "slow-motion moral collapse" which he blames for fostering the disorder.

"This has been a wake-up call for our country. Social problems that have been festering for decades have exploded in our face," Cameron told an audience at a youth center in Witney, his Parliamentary district in southern England.

"Just as people last week wanted criminals robustly confronted on our street, so they want to see these social problems taken on and defeated."

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said Monday that he was already examining whether those involved in the riots should have their welfare payments cut, while London mayor Boris Johnson said young people convicted over the disorder would lose their right to use public transport for free. ...

What is the L in Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is a great day to celebrate! But what are we really celebrating? I think for many it's about the attraction and physical side. Now that's good but if that is all there is it can focus too much on the small "l" or lust (that's more about you). I think it is or should be about the big "L" or LOVE (that's more about the other person). And what is LOVE really?

The best definition I have seen is in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13. Here are the key descriptors. I like the Philips Version.

Think today about how you stack up. And think about some tangible way to live these qualities out today. Heck try living these principles for the next month. And tell us you story.

BTW, I just read this passage to my wife Mary who lives these out and asked her how I doing (yikes)! She said I wasn't failing:) Whew!

love - the highest and best gift

13:1-3 - If I speak with the eloquence of men and of angels, but have no love, I become no more than blaring brass or crashing cymbal. If I have the gift of foretelling the future and hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but the very secrets of God, and if I also have that absolute faith which can move mountains, but have no love, I amount to nothing at all. If I dispose of all that I possess, yes, even if I give my own body to be burned, but have no love, I achieve precisely nothing.

13:4 - This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience - it looks for a way of being constructive. It is not possessive: it is neither anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own importance.

13:5-6 - Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it is glad with all good men when truth prevails.

13:7-8a - Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen.awe

My Favorite Model of Leadership

As the culture becomes more and more dysfunctional we need people at all levels to take the lead!

I routinely read leadership books, blogs, trends and articles on leadership in the corporate, political and non-profit arenas. There are many interesting models of good leadership but I believe the best anywhere can be found in the the lives of three men who had an enormous impact in the 1st Century.

In a few short months Paul, Timothy, and Silas, three men of distinctly different personalities equipped leaders who built one of the healthiest and sucessfulchurches in the New Testament.

These leaders modeled 10 core principles recorded in 1 Thessalonians 2:7-12. Two of these are implicit and eight are explicit.

Team Oriented. They worked together. And, they all manifested and lived out the same principles regardless of personality. So you can say, "it's just not my personality."
Disciplined Life. They consistently and persistently lived out these principles. They were patterned, disciplined and built these as core competencies.
Gentle Spirit. They cared for their people "like a nursing mother tenderly cares for here child." Think of that metaphor and the tenderness it elicits.
Fond Affection. They authentically cared for these people. They "loved them so much" that they lived out this life of sacrifice and commitment.
Effective Communications. The connected with people. They knew had to listen and how to deliver truth.
Personal Openness. They were transparent and knew how to "impart their own lives." The word is "soul". They opened up their lives (good and bad) to those they served.
Servant Leadership. They understood the power of serving others and leading in a way that met others.
Hard Work. They "worked night and day" so they wouldn't burden people. They were tireless.
Strong Model. They were good models before others and God. They didn't fake it but walked their talk.
Caring Confrontation. They confronted and encouraged like "a father" because they wanted these people to grow and become all God had in mind for them.

I recently read a blog with piece from the Josephson Institute of Ethics on living for what counts. I like this. What would you add or change here?

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear.
So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

Elizabeth Edwards Lasting Legacy

By this time I'm sure you have heard that Elizabeth Edwards has passed away. After a life of great victories and some great challenges she leaves a lasting legacy of optimism, leadership, loyalty and living life at full tilt.

My friend Catherine passed on this quotation from Elizabeth that touched both of us. "The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful."

These words remind me of Psalm 90 when we are told to "remember and number our days."

So why don't you take the rest of 2010 and imagine that you had ONLY 2011 left to live. Yes, on January 1, 2011 you are ought of here, gone, exist on this earth no more.

So, how will you live differently? Answer these questions and let me know your thoughts?

Teamwork in a Downturn

A client of mine and a great company Pacific Dental Practices put out this piece in their weekly update. They practice this and it has some great insights.

What do you think.

Staubach stressed the importance of teamwork, particularly in tough times, with a story about how the Cowboys couldn’t win their first Super Bowl until the players learned to work together. The hall-of-famer relayed how during the 1971 season, former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, who was a tight end for the Cowboys at the time, talked to his teammates after they had lost several games. Ditka said he would play as hard as he could and would help his teammates as well, and he expected the other players to do the same. “Mike was a big guy, a scary guy at the time,” Staubach said.

After Ditka’s pep talk, the Cowboys won nine straight games, made it to the Super Bowl and beat the Miami Dolphins 24-3. “You have to work harder in a downturn,” Staubach said. “You need the ‘teabags’ in life — the people who can perform in hot water.”

Take a few minutes to discuss with your team the things that each of us can do better to help bring success our way.

Chile Ministry Helps Trapped Miners

Editor's Note: We received this update from Christian Maureira about the Chile ministry's efforts to help the trapped miners. This was translated by Doug Barron.

Hello team and friends! I want to share with you about the last 2 very intense weeks as we have worked on the project to take the Word of God and the JESUS audio version to the mine, but it has really be worth the effort as it is food for the soul. This long history of the miners that is now passing 2 months has been without doubt the longest survival experience for people trapped underground.

This all started on the August 5, when the San Jose mine collapsed because of the exploration in the mine. The news was not good as it was only 6 months after we had experience the very large earthquake and tsunami. With a population less than other countries in the world, problems like this seem much closer to you and much more like it is part of your own family.

After 2 weeks without news from the miners we could only think the worst. The government had made every effort, but it was reasonable to think that the miners were lost, above all considering the distance where they were located, some 700 meters (2,000 feet) deep with a difficult future to be rescued. But God had other plans and 2 days later (the 17th day), contact with them was made. Obviously we were all very happy and we celebrated the miracle that all were alive.

As Campus Crusade, God guided us to think about how we could help these men and this was how we took the initiative to contact some churches in the north, leaders and authorities about sending the JESUS audio into the mine. It wasn't easy in the beginning because of some apathy in the Christian leadership and a lack of a sense of urgency, together with the restrictive control of the rescue team but, God in His sovereignty provided that we were able to gain contact with the daughter and the brother of 1 of the 3 Christians that were trapped there.

During several weeks, I was in contact with them and I explored the possibility of sending them audio material. Finally, I traveled to the mine with 33 MP3's containing the JESUS audio version and an ample portion of the Bible. I was there for 2 days and we sent the MP3's through each family members that were there.

Jose Samuel, my contact in the mine (father of Hettiz and brother of Gaston) is an extraordinary man who has really surprised me. The psychologists that are giving help from the surface have recognized that he has been a tremendous emotional and spiritual support for the rest of his co-workers.

He sent me a letter that grabbed my attention for his incredible clarity of thought. For example, some parts of the letter are:

"I want to express my appreciation for this great blessing for me and my co-workers, it will be very good our edification" (He is talking about the MP3's)

"I am well because Christ lives in me"

"We have prayer services at 12 a.m. and 6 p.m."

"I ask all of you for pray not only for us here, but for all the lost people in the world"

At the end of the letter he signed off with Psalm 95:4, "In his hand are the depths of the earth, and mountain peaks belong to him."

This is a very motivating story, let's continue to pray for the salvation of these souls. Thanks for being part of this.
